What should you do if your employment history excluding current job is more than 5 years old?
I have been out of employment now for about 5 years, excluding the direct sales job I now have. One of those "go and do a show in peoples home" type of jobs. Of which I have been doing since last October. Recently I have taken to looking for a part-time job for extra income. What should I do if my last employment was older than 5 years. Should I just omit it and try to start fresh? Or should I post and explain at the interview ( if given one) the reason for the lapses?
No…your experience is still important. All you need to do is explain your respite from employment. If you have taken that time to be a parent, simply explain your values in family and that you felt it was important to raise your children to an age where they were a little more self sufficient rather than have sitter’s raise them. People respect that more than you think. Just tell the truth. If that is a good guess at the reason you have not been working…you can tell them too that you have been a nanny, a maid, a chauffeur, a chef, a nurse, a teacher, a counselor, an accountant and financial advisor, and on and on. In fact if you were to be paid for all that you have done in the past 5 years with that, that you are worth quite a lot of money if you were paid all of those salaries. Fact is you are quite well rounded and diversified! Make it positive!
