I am setting up a job fair, is it better to set it up for a Saturday or a weekday evening?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

I am setting up a free community job fair and will include some companies and consultants for people who are interested in starting their own businesses. I have a choice of two dates a Saturday morning or a Wednesday evening. Which is better?

i would definitely say a saturday morning…it might be a better turn out because people might be off work and have more time on their hands as opposed to a weekday evening. Good luck!

How to make a resume for a job fair if I haven’t had a job before?

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

I just graduated high school a little over a month ago and I have been applying to jobs around my city, I am going to a job fair tomorrow where there is suppose to be a couple businesses looking for people but I have never had a job before and I am not sure what to put on my resume that I need to pass out to the different companies. I don’t know what businesses are going to be there so the title letter needs to be pretty vague thanks a lot!

Resume extracurricular activities, particularly for students and recent graduates with little work experience, demonstrate important skills that are valuable in the work place. If you’re getting ready to graduate this year, it’s time to reconsider your resume.

Sometimes, however, extracurricular activities detract from your resume, in which case you should not include them. Don’t know which ones to list? Keep resume extracurricular activities if they demonstrate your commitment to these activities, skills and responsibilities.

1. Managing People and Events

Have you acted as a leader in any of your extracurricular activities? Been captain of the football team? Editor-in-chief at your school newspaper? Mention it on your resume!

Managerial skills, even in your school newspaper, demonstrate your ability to work with and organize a group–an impressive extracurricular activity!
2. Study Abroad and Foreign Language Programs

Proficiency in more than one language is a valuable asset anywhere you go, including the workplace. Your attempt at learning another language (however successful), looks attractive on a resume.

Studying abroad demonstrates a desire to explore new cultures and the ability to integrate quickly with other people, which is a valuable skill in the workplace.
3. Community Service

As a resume extracurricular activity, it doesn’t get much better than community service. This shows that you’re a self-starter, that you’re selfless, and that you care about the community that you’re part of. With enough resume extracurricular activities like these, you’ll be preparing for a job interview in no time.
4. Writing & Technical Experience

If you have writing experience or technical training, these are great resume extracurricular activities to include. Even if they seem unrelated, these skills are useful in nearly all workplaces.

Being able to express yourself, in English or HTML, is a skill that companies greatly value, so let your resume tell them how experienced you are!
5. Long-Term Dedication

If you’ve had a job or extracurricular activity that you’ve worked on for a long period of time, mention it on your resume even if it doesn’t relate to the job you’re applying for.

The ability to commit to a specific task for an extended period of time is an admirable and attractive aspect of resume extracurricular activities.

Resume extracurricular activities should be carefully selected. Listing dozens of unrelated, passing extracurricular activities says little about you and makes you seem unfocused.

Listing relevant and admirable resume extracurricular skills shows employers what kind of work ethic you have and what valuable skills you can bring to the table.

What do i need to expect for the SYEP job fair?

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

I have to go to the job fair and i do not know how im suppose to dress, what im suppose to say, and pretty much what is going to be going on. I need help cause im just hoping i get the job i want!!

here is what i got for e-mail last year
"we HIGHLY recommend that you dress appropriately (business casual) and have several copies of your resume with you on Friday. If you don’t know what a resume is or are not sure how to write one, I have attached a copies of “How to Write a Resume”, and an “SYEP Resume Template.” I have also included a document that lists what to wear and what NOT to wear (2 .JPG files) to a job interview."
mine might be different from yours, but dressing in business casual couldn’t go wrong. About the resume, last year i went, the guy didn’t check my resume, because they would accept anyone. some of them need an interview, some of them accept anyone. You are really lucky on getting a job, I don’t think i will have a job this summer. good luck on your job fair

I missed the sixflags White waters job fair can i still get hired?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

The job fair was March 17 and i applied in April. I didn’t know they were having one until now. Is there any chance that i could still get hired. I tried calling their human resource number and employment number but no one picks up.

P.S im 16 and i REALLY need a summer job.

When a waterpark has a job fair it is so they can get a large group of "new hires" and go through the necessary training with the whole group instead of "on the job" rush training.
If you have lifeguard training already it will be a plus on your application. If not, see if the red cross or other organizations offer it. Training/ experience will get your "late" app. considered above others if possitions become available.
They WILL have done most of their hiring at the time of the job fair. Don’t worry though, sometimes people will get the job, work a couple of weekends and then decide they would rather be riding than working. :)

Should I go to job fair with over 50 companies or a job interview that is guarnteed to hire me>?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

The job that would hire me is NCO in Rockford. TMOBILE Customer service 40 hours a week, 9 an hour. I’d be driving 500 miles a week. They are only interview till today so I said yes to the interview. NCO is known for bad work environment from previous employees with the turn over rate and how they are treated. Should I go to the interview, or go to the job fair and pass up a temporary job?

Definitely expand your horizon. If you already have the inside scoop of a company’s ethics, then why waste time and energy if you feel you will wind up just like the other employees?
50 companies are a better bet. Find out which companies are going to be there and do some research on which ones you want to spring into action with.

What should I expect at California’s Great America Job Fair in san jose, ca?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Im going to the summer job fair on sunday.
Has anyone been through the process and can give me pointers?
Also, it starts at 10 and ends at 3, but im afraid ive made previous unchangeable engagements and probably wont get there until 11. What are my odds of getting an interview? What should i wear? =( Please help!

I’d wear something professional but not too professional because if no one dresses up you don’t want to feel embarrassed. You will likely get an interveiw.

How should I dress for this job fair?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

How should I dress for a job fair? There is going to be a job fair for this call center that I will be attending. I really want (and more importantly need) this job. So I kind of want to stand out from everyone else but I don’t want to look too formal or ridiculous. The announcement for the fair says that it will give you an interview on the spot. However I don’t know how to dress for it. Should I dress like I usually do when I am called for a normal interview or is it different for a job fair?

I think that it’s important to look exactly as you would for a real interview. So dress up nice, I think you’re a woman so, nice dress pants (black or grey) with a button down blouse tucked in, a belt, nice shoes (low heels or flats). If you want some pizazz, to help you stand out, wear a bright colored blouse. Like blue or light green maybe. I’d avoid red- that’s asking for too much attention! Honestly all an employer is really looking for is a good attitude about working and a good personality as well. Even someone with a designer suit might not get that job with out those features. But do avoid looking too sloppy. If you have to walk around for a long time to all the booths, try to go freshen up in the bathroom after a few interviews! Good luck! I hope you get the job!
